Found this little airport in Sonoma, California where they had a bunch of old planes out on display. I asked if it was ok to take some pictures and the people there gave their blessing.
An incredible moment happened while I was there…the airport had an old B-52 bomber on display that actually flew. The revved up the engines, taxied down their little runway and prepared for take-off. I decided to place myself at the very end of the runway where the plane would be taking off from and got out the camera with my 18-200mm lens.
As the bomber rumbled down the runway I was just shooting away with my camera. Now imagine this…I’m literally standing on the end of the runway when this plane comes rumbling down and takes off only a few hundred feet in front of me and roars just over my head as it makes it’s way into the air. My whole body was rumbling and vibrating from this massive plane; such an adrenaline rush. Nothing else that day came even close to that experience, fabulous!

They are both nice shots. The perspective and color in the first one is especially nice. If you ever shoot prop planes in the air again (and have a few seconds to think about it as you probably did not here), it’s good to use a counterintuitive shutter speed. You want to have a fast shutter, because heck you are shooting a plane flying! But speeds above about 1/160th “stop the prop†and you end up with a POV that we do not see with our eyes.
Imagine a guy in the gunnery area with his hands on the machine gun, trained on you! Probably happen many times in this plane’s life.
Great post!
Fabulous photo with the yellow flowers, Allyn! I love the rich colors and perspective. As for the second one, I commend you… I would have been running for dear life. Wonderful captures.
Thanks for the construction criticism…I very much appreciate it.
