Obvious talent and the potential to become more, that’s what I see in the images of Sally, this months photographer. I came across her images on Flickr and from the first image I was grabbed and held hostage by the striking poses, wide eyes, and mystery. Her self portraits will bring a smile to your face and a curious thought to the mind.
You can’t help but wonder what she’s thinking or feeling in her images, you keep coming back in hopes of getting more of a glimpse into who she is. You find joy in the light and passion in the shadows as she draws you in and holds you there. Still young in her craft, each picture brings more maturity to her view of things, both in the senses and technically.
I’m very anxious to see where she takes her craft next. Her plans for the future include studying photography and making it her career. I think we’re going to be hearing a lot from this young lady.
I posed some questions to Sally about her photography and what follows are her responses.
Q: How did you get started with Photography?
A: My older brother had just bought a new camera. I just had an impulse to take some shots and found out that it was really fun! I continued to persistently shoot for about a week until I had the hang of it.
Q: How long have you been involved in photography?
A: About seven months now. Before that, I had picked up a little point and shoot a couple times to take self portraits like most teenage girls, but I really had no interest in photography at the time.
Q: How would you describe your overall style of photography?
A: Very personal. I don’t think I’ve completely found my style yet. Being new at photography, I am enjoying trying different styles. However, my favorite so far has been the darker, mysterious photos. More specifically dealing with portraits.
Q: What advice do you have for emerging photographers?

A: Keep shooting!! Find the area of photography that you love and shoot from the heart! Never settle for “good.” but rather, experiment and go beyond everything you’ve ever done! But above all, be patient. Don’t give up even if it seems you’re getting nowhere! After all, practice makes perfect!
Q: What type of equipment do you use when shooting?
A: I shoot with a Canon Rebel XTi with two lenses and of course - a tripod. I mostly use a Canon 24-105 portrait lens. However, once in a while, I’ll pick up a Canon EFS 18-55mm because its smaller and not as heavy.
Q: What photographers are you influenced by?
A: There are so many! I couldn’t possibly name them all! However, I think the biggest influence has been Chris and Patrica Beltrami. I’ve been viewing their work since as far back as I can remember. Of course, all of my wonderful flickr contacts have greatly influenced me. Out of those, Elizabeth Salib and .Bradi. are probably the most influential.
Q: How do you know when the image you’ve taken is a good one?
A: Something inside me soars! I can’t explain it. When it happens, you’ll know.
Q: What’s your goal with your photography?
A: I plan on attending college to obtain a degree in photography. After that, I’ll do whatever God leads me to do. I would love to open my own studio someday but, having another job would be fine as long as I enjoy it. My ultimate goal however, is to never stop trying to perfect my eye and technique and to impact others in some small way.
Take a look at Sally’s Flickr stream and see if you don’t agree that she is one talented young photographer.
