The Sprinklers

The Sprinklers

The Sprinklers

I was simply driving down the road when I noticed this scene…I had to stop and capture it. The light, the fog, the sprinklers, the hills and the green field all seemed to be perfectly placed at the perfect time.

This shot was taken from Lombard St., at the top of the crooked street that is so famous. I’ve never realy noticed this view before until I was driving passed it the other morning. That’s the bay bridge lights in the background.

John Chiara Shows His Photography Workflow

Some people think he’s crazy, some think innovative - I just think this is very cool and he say’s it best, “I’m not going backwards, I’m just trying to create something that is my own”.

Take a look at this very unique workflow by John Chiara; I’d love to hear what you think about it.

A Primer in Selling Your Art At Festivals

Have you ever considered selling your art at one of those art festivals you drag your spouse to from time-to-time? If so, there’s a nice article over at the Digital Photography School site that gives you numerous items to think about.

I always thought you just applied for a booth and showed up with your wares, but I’m finding that there is a lot more that goes into this than meets the eye.

Shooting the Ladies

A gentlemen shooting what are called the “Painted Ladies” in Alamo Square, San Francisco.

Sunny Sixteen Rule

In photography, the sunny 16 rule (or, less often, the “sunny f/16 rule“) is a method to estimate correct daylight exposures without using a light meter.

The basic sunny 16 rule, applicable on a sunny day, is this:

For example, for ISO 100 film, choose shutter speed of 1/100 second (or 1/125 second)

The elaborated form of the sunny 16 rule for more general situations is:

  1. Set the shutter speed to the setting nearest to the ISO film speed
  2. Set the f-number according to the table below:
Aperture Lighting Conditions Shadow Detail
f/16 Sunny Distinct
f/11 Slight Overcast Soft around edges
f/8 Overcast Barely visible
f/5.6 Heavy Overcast No shadows
f/4 Sunset

[1]

For example, to shoot ISO 100 film in sunny conditions, set the shutter speed to 1/100 or 1/125 and the f-stop to f/16. With ISO 200 film, set the speed to 1/200 or 1/250. For ISO 400 film, 1/400 or 1/500. As with other light readings, the shutter speed can be changed, as long as the f-number is compensated. For example, 1/250th of a second at f/11 would be equivalent to 1/125th at f/16.

Park Bench

Seemingly after a long morning of collecting aluminum cans, this gentlemen needed to take a rest on this park bench in San Jose.

Street Photography

For a long time now I’ve been very interested in street photography; walking the streets of a city and taking photos of the everyday characters in it. The one thing about street photography that seems to always hold me back, is whether or not I’m going to have a confrontation with someone who takes offense to my photographing them. I know that as a street photographer you really can’t think about this, you just need to take the shot you want to take and not worry about it.

I guess you could use a long lens and take the photos at a distance, but is that really street photography? I tend to think not. I’m of the idea that you need to get close to people, mix in the crowd and find those interesting characters, in order for an image to be considered street.

Street Photography will be something that I will continue to work on and hopefully by doing more and more; come up with my own style. You’ll start to see more of this type of photography on this site, my goal is to capture characters and emotion from the street. To make you wonder about the story behind each character, the stories that we all have.

Here are a couple of videos regarding street photography that I’ve found very insiteful, I hope you will to.

Sutro Sunset

Traveled into the city this evening to catch the sunset at the Sutro Bath ruins. It’s always a gorgeous scene there - it amazes me that more people don’t come here to watch the sunset. Check out the videos.

Here’s a video of the Sutro Bath story:

Here’s a short video from my shoot last evening.

Golden Gate Fog

Golden Gate Fog

I met an online friend from Flickr for the first time this past Thursday. She was here from New Jersey visiting her family. We went shooting around the Golden Gate Bridge and this is one of the shots from that outing.

Kim and I hit it off immediately, she’s fabulous. We had a great time learning about one another and shooting - I wish she lived closer. You can see Kim’s work on her Flickr account and you can also check out her blog here.

Take a read and get up to speed on your rights and the rights of others. Also some very good resource links at the end of the piece that are worth checking out.

SF from YB

SF from YB

SF from YB

After taking my wife to the airport last night, I decided to pull over on Yeurba Beuna Island on the way home. I wanted to see what kind of view we had of the city at midnight and possibly take a shot. The city, of course, was lit up nicely and there was a nice cover of fog over it. I thought what the heck, let’s take it.

However, I didn’t want to take the shot from the same ole touristy place - I wanted a slightly different view. So I drove a little ways down the road to a cut out I’d seen in the past, climbed over some railing and ended up on a small dirt hill just off the road and to the right of the Bay Bridge. This is the view I was able to capture.
